Saturday recap: UNH comeback win overshadows Merrimack, Vermont romps

at Merrimack 11, UMass 2
ANDOVER, MA - A night after barely trumping Northeastern, Merrimack returned home and cruised to victory over a vulnerable UMass squad. Chris Barton and Jesse Todd scored twice for the Warriors and Barton added three assists for a team-high five points. Eleven Warriors had multi-point nights, including five with three points. Joe Cannata stopped 19 shots before being lifted early in the third period. Merrimack got 42 shots on net, bringing their total for the weekend to 80 SOG. The win - Merrimack's 17th - set a new school record for victories in a season.

at Vermont 7, Providence 1
BURLINGTON, VT - Providence’s tenuous grasp on eighth place was - at long last - emphatically released as Rob Madore turned in a strong Saturday performance for the first time in weeks and seven Catamounts scored to help Vermont gain control of the last Hockey East playoff spot.
Sebastian Stalberg assisted on Chris McCarthy’s game-winner and a Drew MacKenzie goal. Kyle Medvec also had two assists on the night for UVM, which chased Alex Beaudry after he let six of the nineteen shots he saw in the first two periods past him. Madore turned away 31 Friar shots to earn his fifth win of the year.

at UNH 5, Maine 4
DURHAM, NH - Gustav Nyquist scored the first Maine goal of the game and missed the most important one after he stole the puck away from Matt DiGirolamo and hit the post on a wide open net with 22 seconds remaining. Spencer Abbott missed the rebound with the net still empty and Paul Thompson took the puck the length of the ice, banking the game-winning goal off the back of Shawn Sirman at 19:44.
John Henrion scored twice for the Wildcats, who relinquished a 1-0 lead before battling back from 2-1 to lead at 3-2, then traded goals with Maine the rest of the way. The back-and-forth pace overshadowed that there were only four penalties taken in the entire game, and none in the third period. DiGirolamo stopped 24 Maine shots for his 17th win, tying him for the league lead with Merrimack’s Cannata. The win bumped UNH into first place by themselves for the first time all season.
