Hockey East Friday Recap

at Boston College 5, UMass 0
CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Philip Samuelsson scored twice and John Muse stopped everything he saw as the nation’s top-ranked team warmed up for the Beanpot in style, defeating the reeling Minutemen handily. Muse only had to stop 14 UMass shots before being lifted to give Chris Venti some time. The Eagles got 38 shots on UMass goaltending, and Paul Carey, Joe Whitney and Cam Atkinson each scored to bolster the lead. Three Eagles had multi-point nights.

at Boston University 3, Lowell 1
BOSTON, MA - Despite fighting the entire game, Lowell wasn’t able to generate any offense on Kieran Millan as the Terriers weathered a slow start and added two more points next to their name. Garrett Noonan, Max Nicastro and Joe Pereira scored for BU, which won for the third time in four games. Millan stopped 30 shots for his tenth win of the season. David Vallorani scored the lone goal for Lowell.

at Vermont 1, Providence 1
BURLINGTON, VT - In Hockey East’s forgotten battle, two teams in desperate need of points were each able to get them. Rob Madore stopped 39 shots, with Ian O’Connor scoring to even the game at the halfway mark of the second period. Alex Beaudry fended off 32 Catamounts shots. Drew MacKenzie scored a power play goal for Vermont.

Merrimack 4, at Northeastern 3
BOSTON, MA - Joe Cucci floated a knucklepuck off a Northeastern defender and past Chris Rawlings’ glove to earn the hat trick and complete a come-from-behind win in overtime for Merrimack, who grabbed a stranglehold on fourth place in Hockey East with the two points. Wade MacLeod extended his Hockey East point streak to nine games with an assist on Tyler  McNeely’s opening goal. Merrimack was 2-for-6 on the power play. Joe Cannata stopped 23 Northeastern shots to earn his league-leading 16th win. Rawlings stopped 35 Merrimack attempts.

at UNH 6, Maine 3
DURHAM, NH - Paul Thompson scored twice, recording his 100th career point on the opening goal and UNH survived a Gustav Nyquist hat trick to keep pace with BC for first place in Hockey East. Phil DeSimone and Blake Kessel each had three assists for the Wildcats, who won their third straight game and have won six of seven Hockey East contests. Matt Di Girolamo stopped 37 shots on the night to win his league-leading 16th game and four Wildcats had multi-point nights. Maine’s power play was 3-for-4; UNH went 2-for-3 with the man advantage.
