Hockey East Saturday Recap

No. 17 Merrimack 7, No. 9 Maine 1
ANDOVER, MA - Stephane da Costa scored twice and Martin Oullette’s dream December faded quickly against Merrimack team needing a quality win. Along with da Costa, five other Warriors scored after Robby Dee gave Maine an early 1-0 lead; Joe Cucci, Shawn Bates and da Costa tallied against Oullette in the first. Dan Sullivan relieved the freshman in net in the second period, but it made little difference as Chris Barton, Brandon Brodhag and Jesse Todd accompanied da Costa in continuing the assault.
Merrimack junior Joe Cannata  earned his tenth win as Merrimack - who tied then-number one BU twice in November - defeated a ranked opponent for the first time all year.

No. 3 Boston College 3, Providence 1
PROVIDENCE, RI - Brian Dumoulin scored the opening goal and assisted on Jimmy Hayes’ game-winner as BC swept the weekend series with Providence. Chris Kreider closed out the scoring for the Eagles, netting his second goal in two games.
Providence senior forward Ian O’Connor scored the lone goal for the Friars. BC has won seven in a row and nine of its last ten. BC Sophomore Parker Milner - spelling John Muse - stopped 32 of 33 shots to earn his second win of the season. The game saw each team called for ten minor penalties.

No. 4 UNH 3, at UMass 1
AMHERST, MA - Phil DeSimone and Blake Kessel scored 45 seconds apart in the third period to boost UNH to its sixth straight Hockey East win. Adam Phillips scored the lone goal for UMass on the power play, but the Minutemen were unable to solve Matt DiGirolamo the rest of the night.
UMass has lost five straight, and has lost consecutive games at home for the first time all season.

at Northeastern 3, UMass-Lowell 1
BOSTON, MA -Freshman Clay Witt pitched a near-shutout for Northeastern to earn his first career win, , allowing one goal that never entered the cage Freshman Brodie Reid opened the scoring for the Huskies, and Wade MacLeod lit the lamp 18 seconds into the third period with the decisive goal. Tyler McNeely scored an empty-net goal with 19 seconds remaining in the game to round out the scoring.
Riley Wetmore continued his strong season for Lowell, his ninth goal the only marker for the RiverHawks; even though replays showed it pushed the netting up into the top of the net, it was still ruled a goal. Lowell’s loss was their school-record 11th consecutive defeat.
