CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The second of two meetings between the Eagles and the Black bears on Sunday afternoon saw the Eagles pick up where they left off and pick up their 8th win of the season with a score of 4-1.
A cautious first period for both teams, as it appeared neither team had their legs to start to the contest. There wasn’t the same aggressiveness as we saw on Friday night.
Much like Friday night, special teams continue to haunt Maine as Boston College capitalized on the powerplay with a goal from left-winger Paul Carey, his 12th of the season. Carry, parked in front of the net, tapped home a rebound off a shot form the point by Cam Atkinson. Also assisting on the goal was Brian Gibbons.
Maine found their legs for the second half of the first period, as they were able to generate several scoring chances, some a point blank range. Much like the last game, BC goalie John Muse held his ground and kept Maine off the board.
John Muse was one again square to the puck on every shot and gave nothing to the shooter.
The Black Bears finally solved Muse in the second with a long shot form the point by defenseman Mark Nemec. This was the reward of some hard play by Maine in the second after a couple of good scoring chances.
With under 2 minutes to go, BC exploded for two quick goals in 40 seconds. The first was scored by Freshman Bill Arnold after a give and go with Steven Whitney. Arnold roofed the puck over the shoulder of Dan Sullivan on his backhand. Patch Alber also picked up an assist.
40 seconds later Paul Carey scored his second of the game after batting home his own rebound on a partial breakaway. Carey picked the pass out of the air and Assisted by Cam Atkinson and Philip Samuelsson.
Maine squandered two powerplays in the 3rd to dash any hopes of a comeback. Despite several good chances, the Black Bears, once again, could not solve the goaltending of John Muse.
In desperation, Maine pulled their goalie with 3 minutes left. The Eagles capitalized with an empty net goal for Barry Almeida, his first of the season.
Coach Jerry York had nothing but praise for his netminder. “One goal in the weekend. He continues his real strong play for us. Square to the puck and looks confident and strong.”
Special Teams for BC came up big in both games, going 12 for 12 against Maine in this week. “We can go almost all the way down the bench killing penalties” said Coach York.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT
BC’s second goal scored by Bill Arnold was a thing of beauty. Coach York spoke highly of the goal in his post game. “That backhand shot side. I think it went of both bars. It takes a special player to score that.”
Zac’s 3 Stars
1st – BC – F Paul Carey
Paul’s stats tell the story for him tonight. 2 goals, 6 shots and finished a +1 on the night. He was all over the ice and would not stop moving his feet.
2nd – BC – G John Muse
1 goal on 39 shots for the senior. Excellent rebound control and didn’t let rushes by Maine’s forwards phase him.
3rd – Maine – F Gustav Nyquist
Although finishing -2 for the game, Gustav was working hard creating a lot of offense. 8 shots against Muse and was a threat every time
