Hockey East Playoffs: BC Puts Northeastern On Ice, Advances To 6th Final In 7 Years

Northeastern vs. Boston College
BOSTON, MA - Boston College overcame an early deficit, shaky goaltending, some questionable calls and a late charge by Northeastern to advance to their 15th Hockey East championship and their sixth in seventh years.

Senior captain Tyler McNeely opened the scoring for Northeastern at 13:48 of the first period when he knocked a puck into BC’s Joe Whitney and into the Boston College net. The Huskies had numerous chances when John Muse wasn’t able to control rebounds early on, but weren’t able to extend their lead.

Boston College senior Brian Gibbons responded with a goal of his own at 16:05 of the first, and after one the two teams were tied, despite Northeastern having controlled play in the BC end for much of the period.

They weren’t able to sustain the energy in the second, however, as a series of bad penalties led to BC power play goals by Kevin Hayes and Tommy Cross, and a third goal by Steven Whitney, which the sophomore from Reading, MA scored on the backhand, reaching across his body while being taken to the ice by Northeastern’s Jamie Oleksiak. The shot crossed up Huskies netminder Chris Rawlings, who watched the puck soar above his left shoulder.

Rawlings was pulled in favor of Clay Witt after the second period, and Northeastern responded how they’ve always responded in front of the freshman goalie all season long: with vigor and energy. Despite allowing another goal to Pat Mullane, the Huskies drew three Eagles penalties in 3:16. Garrett Vermeersch scored on a 6-on-3 advantage after Greg Cronin pulled Witt for the extra attacker and Wade MacLeod scored his second goal of the game with just 1:03 to play to make it a one-goal game.

BC’s power play finished 3-for-6 on the night, while Northeastern went 2-for-9.

The Huskies weren’t able to get the equalizer, however, and Muse - who stopped 33 shots on the night - earned his school-best 16th postseason win.

BC pushes UNH to the Brink, BU outlasts Northeastern: Hockey East Friday Highlights

at Merrimack 6, Providence 1
ANDOVER, MA - What started as a promising season for the Friars spent two months burning steadily down. Friday night at Lawler Arena, the ashes finally settled. Merrimack - behind another strong effort in net from Joe Cannata - put the kabash on Providence’s playoff hopes and likely on Tim Army’s tenure as coach. Stephane Da Costa returned to action for the first time in three weeks and scored a goal and registered two assists as Joe Cucci scored twice for the Warriors, who clinched home ice in the Hockey East quarterfinals with the win.

Maine 4 at UMass 3
AMHERST, MA - It had been three years since Maine won a game at the Mullins Center, but they didn’t leave any doubt when this one was over. Dan Sullivan extended his and the Black Bears’ season-best win streak to six games, although he allowed two more goals than he’d allowed in the previous four games. Maine improved to 14-1-0 when scoring four or more goals on the season. Robby Dee scored the game-winner for Maine.

at Vermont 4, Lowell 4
BURLINGTON, VT - Five minutes into the third period, the Catamounts had a comfortable 2-0 lead on the worst team in the conference and were ready to seal another trip to the Hockey East playoffs. They still got their playoff berth when Providence lost, but the lead didn’t stand as the RiverHawks scored four goals in just over 11 minutes, taking a lead into the final minute before Jack Downing scored to tie the game at 19:14. David Vallorani continued his strong play with assists on all four Lowell goals as Michael Budd added a goal and two assists and Riley Wetmore had a goal and an assist for Lowell. Rob Madore stopped 22 shots to preserve the tie for homestanding Vermont.

Boston University 3 at Northeastern 2
BOSTON, MA - In a game that saw more penalty minutes than shots on goal, BU extended its conference unbeaten streak to ten games. Sahir GIll scored the game-winner and Kieran Millan fought off a late-game injury and flurry from the Huskies to help the Terriers clinch home-ice advantage in the Hockey East quarterfinals. Millan stopped 39 shots in the win, as Northeastern outshot BU 41-27. Wade MacLeod extended his current Hockey East point streak to three games and Cody Ferriero scored for the second time in as many games for Northeastern.

at Boston College 4, UNH 0
CHESTNUT HILL, MA - The Eagles outshot UNH 42-12 and weren’t any nicer on the real scoreboard as John Muse netted his third shutout and 21st win of the season to boost BC back into first place in Hockey East. Cam Atkinson scored twice and the Eagles scored three special-teams goals as Brian Gibbons recorded the game-winning goal and two assists. Chris Kreider was hit in the jaw with the puck in the second period and left the game to be x-rayed.
Hockey East’s regular-season championship will be decided Saturday night at the Whit as the home-and-home series concludes.

UNH and Northeastern Tie, Maine Beats - Then Beats - Merrimack: Hockey East Friday Highlights

at Maine 4, Merrimack 0
ORONO, ME - Four Black Bears scored and Spencer Abbott tallied three points to extend Maine’s winning streak to three games and hand Merrimack just its second shutout loss on the season, its first such defeat since falling to Providence by a score of 2-0 on November 5th. The two teams combined for 173 penalty minutes, including Kyle Bigos’ match penalty for a blindside hit on Maine’s Gustav Nyquist. The game disqualification means that Bigos will be ineligible for Saturday night’s game with the Black Bears.
Joe Cannata was pulled after letting four of the first 17 pucks he saw past, and took his first loss since January 21st. Dan Sullivan kept an opposing team off the board for the third straight game and currently has a shutout streak of 180 minutes going. The Black Bears as a team haven’t allowed a goal in 190 minutes of play.

Boston College 4 at UMass 3
AMHERST, MA - After the Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the second period, the Minutemen stormed back to come within one goal of tying, but were never able to get over the hump. Brian Gibbons, Joe Whitney and Cam Atkinson each had two-point nights for the Eagles, while nine Minutemen registered a point. John Muse only had to stop 17 shots for the win, while UMass’ Paul Dainton stopped 30 shots, in the process becoming the Minutemen’s all-time saves leader. With the loss, UMass drops to eighth in the conference, two points ahead of Providence.

at Boston University 3, Vermont 3
BOSTON, MA - The Terriers coasted to a three-goal lead nearing the middle of the third period before the Catamounts exploded, scoring three times in 6:52 to tie the game and holding on the rest of the way to earn a point and move into seventh place alone in Hockey East. Nine Vermont players registered a point on the night, and Lance Herrington’s first goal of the season tied it up with 6:31 to play in the game. Rob Madore stopped 43 shots to preserve the tie. Vermont now has a one-point lead on UMass, which lost to Boston College, and maintains a three-point cushion on Providence.

at New Hampshire 2, Northeastern 2
DURHAM, NH - Kevin Goumas shot the puck from the goal line and it bounced off of Mike Hewkin’s stick before hitting Chris Rawlings in the rib and falling into the Northeastern net. The goal - which came after an earlier Goumas goal was disallowed after the net was lifted - tied the game at two, and the Wildcats and Huskies weren’t able to solve each other the rest of the way. New Hampshire lost Greg Burke to what is probably a separated shoulder and Northeastern lost Hewkin to an upper-body injury and neither will play when the two teams face off Saturday at Matthews Arena.
Drew Daniels and Wade MacLeod scored for Northeastern, which got off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to some superb forechecking and great play in the neutral zone. Connor Hardowa, who was moved from defense to center on UNH’s fourth line following the Burke injury in the first period, scored the other Wildcat goal. With the tie, UNH maintains its grip on first place over BC by a point.

at Providence 3, Lowell 3
PROVIDENCE, RI - Matt Germain scored the first and last goal of the game for the Friars and Joseph Pendenza scored twice in 1:21 in the second period for Lowell, which earned a point for the first time since upsetting Merrimack on January 21st. Alex Beaudry stopped 33 shots for Providence, which is now two points out of eighth place in the Hockey East standings.

Hockey East playoffs now have five teams in: Friday recap

The Hockey East playoff picture got a little bit clearer Friday night, with Maine securing a berth and Northeastern moving a point away from getting in after another high-scoring affair with Number One Boston College.

Maine 4 at Lowell 0
LOWELL, MA - Brian Flynn scored twice and Dan Sullivan stopped all 21 RiverHawks shots he saw to earn Maine a berth in the Hockey East playoffs. It was Maine’s second shutout of the year and first since blanking Providence 5-0 on December 4th. It was Sullivan’s first shutout of the season. Matt Mangene scored the game-winning goal at 2:15 of the second period and Jeff Dimmen scored the other goal for the Black Bears.

at Boston University 2, Providence 1
BOSTON, MA - Adam Clendening scored the game-winning goal and Kieran Millan all but shut out the Friars as BU bounced back from a tough loss in the Beanpot consolation game against Harvard to earn two points. Millan stopped 36 shots to earn his 7th win and keep BU in line for home-ice advantage in the Hockey East quarterfinals. Ian O’Connor scored his eighth goal of the season to get the Friars on the board, but it wasn’t enough.

at Merrimack 4, UMass 3 (OT)
ANDOVER, MA - The Minutemen gave up two one-goal leads in the third period and Carter Madsen scored the game-winning goal on the first shift of overtime to keep Merrimack in third place in Hockey East. Playing without leading scorer Stephane Da Costa who was out with a knee injury, Merrimack still managed to generate enough offense to get the win, although it took them just over 48 minutes to net their first goal. Adam Phillips scored twice for Massachusetts, but it wasn’t enough as Joe Cannata stopped 27 UMass shots to earn his league-leading 20th win.

at Boston College 7, Northeastern 7 (OT)
CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Wade MacLeod extended his Hockey East point streak to eleven games, scoring twice for the Huskies. But he was hardly alone, as Cam Atkinson and Beanpot MVP Chris Kreider scored twice, leading six Eagles and five Huskies who had multi-point nights. Parker Milner stopped only five of nine shots before being lifted for John Muse midway through the second period. Robbie Vrolyk scored his first collegiate goal in the tie, and Chris Rawlings stopped 30 of 37 Eagles shots to move Northeastern a point away from clinching a playoff berth.

UNH 6 at Vermont 1
BURLINGTON, VT - Phil DeSimone scored twice and UNH scored six unanswered goals after spotting Vermont a 1-0 lead to blow the Catamounts out. DeSimone’s first goal at 10:37 of the first was his 100th career point. Matt Di Girolamo stopped 21 shots to earn his 18th win of the year, tying him for second with BC’s John Muse in Hockey East. Kevin Goumas and Stevie Moses each scored and tallied two assists for UNH. 6 at Vermont 1
